“Topping Off” Ceremony
A large crowd was on hand for the “Topping Off” ceremony, held in front of the new East Bridgewater Junior/Senior High School site on April 12, 2012. The list of speakers included members of the legislative delegation, Massachusetts School Building Authority representatives, the Superintendent and School Committee. Click here to view photos.
The large group of students and teachers in attendance cheered heartily when the final steel beam was raised by a crane, complete with US flag and a small Christmas tree. The “Topping Off” ceremony, a tradition of ironworkers, is held whenever the skeleton of a bridge or building is completed. The tree is meant to represent good luck for the future occupants and the flag is intended to indicate both patriotism and that government funding was used in the project. Certainly, this last sentiment is true in East Bridgewater, where almost 65% of the project will be paid with state funds.
